What is the History of Port Harcourt?

Port Harcourt, prior to the establishment of a port in 1912, was simply rural town like most places in Nigeria. It was occupied by the Igbo sub-group, the Ikwerre people. The villages were Diobu and Igweocha. The main part of the city was the farm of these people, and the government acquired the land for development of the proposed Port City.

The desire of the British, especially the Governor General Lord Lugard to establish the city was born out of the discovery of coal in Enugu. The discovery of coal in Enugu led to the idea of establishing a port to facilitate the exportation of the coal. The land was acquired, the port built, and the city started developing. The name of the city became Port Harcourt, named after Lious Vernon Harcourt, then then Secretary of the Colonies.

The city was well planned, and was developed to be a green city, sometimes called “the Garden City.” Furthermore, in the 1950s and 1960s, it shifted away from just a port city to a heavily industrialized city with a focus on oil exploration and export. This began as oil was discovered in commercial quantity very close to the city. Oil beacme the major export from the port, and coal export stopped. Even palm oil that was heavily exported in the past also stopped. Other items that stopped being exported are Tin and Columbite from Jos.

At the moment, this city is among Nigeria’s top five largest cities in size and population. It is an oil rich city with high GDP rate driven by oil. The indigenous population are highly educated, and economically buoyant.
