Atedo Peterside was born into a middle-class home in Port Harcourt in 1955. His father, Clement Atowari, was an opthalmologist, and later became the Controller of Medical Services in Rivers State. Being born in Port Harcourt, he did his earliest childhood in the city. He hails from Rivers State.
He was enrolled to King’s College, Lagos, for his secondary school education. After finishing from the school, he proceeded to City University in London to study Economics. Right after acquiring his bachelor’s degree in Economics in the late 1970s, he moved to the famous London School of Economics and Political Science to get his master’s degree in Economics.
Atedo Peterside came back to Nigeria after that. In Nigeria, he started an investment bank, IBTC that later turned out to be one of the best in the country. IBTC stands for Investment Banking and Trust Company. He started the bank and financial institution in 1989.
This is when his knowledge and experience about the Nigerian market blossomed. IBTC grew and attracted customers. Peterside employed his deep knowledge of Economics, and good grasp of management, to lead his organization to become one of the best in the country.
In 2005, he merged his company with another financial institution and became the chairman. The final merger happened in 2007, and what we know as Stanbic IBTC emerged. He was the chairman and CEO from then till 2017.
All these while he was chairman and CEO of other companies and businesses. Some of these companies and businesses include Merchant Bank Limited, Mobil Oil, Presco PLC, Lekoil Limited, and some others. He was also on the executive board of multinational corporations like Cardbury Nigeria PLC, Nigerian Breweries, Unilever, and some others.
In 2007, he was appointed member of Nigeria’s National Economic Management Team. He served in the position from 2007 to 2010. He was reappointed in 2011, and served till 2015.
He is the Founder of ANAP Foundation, a non-profit and non-governmental organization with a mandate for good governance. He is also the founder of ANAP Business Jets Limited with the aim of leasing jets to interested people. ANAP is an acronym for his name.
Atedo Peterside continues to sit on the board of several multinational corporations. He has actively participated in politics, and shown his support for different candidates in Nigeria’s National Elections since 2011. His opinions are constant on Nigeria’s economy and government.
